Spring 2008
Maria Pinto’s newest collection is a sophisticated blend of form and function. Pinto drapes to create clothing and accessories that move with the body in a seductive, always flattering, and enduringly beautiful way. Inspired by Richard Serra’s “Torqued Ellipses,” Pinto plays with elliptical seaming and the contrast of positive/negative spacing. The Spring 2008 Collection is alive with bold, saturated colors like mandarin, cobalt, and fire; which are highlighted in deceptively simple shapes with the couture-like touches that Maria Pinto is known for.
Spring 2008 offers clean, fresh looks for day. The Mae Jacket in khaki Italian cotton features elliptical seams that meet at the wearer’s waist giving way to an arc tracing the hip. As with almost any Maria Pinto creation, each piece can stand alone as a covetable addition to any woman’s wardrobe, or be built upon for a head-to-toe look.
For cocktail and evening, something the Maria Pinto devotees’ line up for, Spring 2008 does not disappoint. The Hallie Dress in mandarin duchess satin is a stand out. In front, it is simple in silk; in back, it curves from the top of the shoulder to the waist, creating a long asymmetrical line exposing the wearer’s back.
Working both sides of the structure/flow divide, Maria Pinto offers fluidity in the Jezebel Gown. Made of Italian linen with an abstract application of silver lacquer, the Jezebel features a bodice with arcing armholes culminating in a racer-back cut. Extending from the empire seam of the racer-back, a gathering of fabric releases into a cascade of volume, falling to the hem of the train.
Spring 2008 holds the promise of warmly sensual days and nights; piece by glorious piece, Maria Pinto has delivered the clothing to celebrate them.
The Maria Pinto Spring 2008 Collection is available at Barneys New York, Saks Fifth Avenue, Takashimaya, and fine specialty stores throughout the country
