Brrr! The polar vortex may be receding, but we’ve still got lots of winter left to go. In Chicago, we take seriously the yearly challenge of trying to stay warm without looking like snow-bos. I look for accessories that have fun and interesting details, as well as layering pieces made from high-tech fabrics designed to keep heat in with minimal bulk.
Here are some winter staples I can’t live without.

I’m obsessed with Eugenia Kim’s designs—she creates beautiful hats that have a touch of wit. I love the Mimi, a knit cap with fur mouse ears. It’s a welcome dose of whimsy on cold, gray days.
Long Leather Gloves with Cashmere Lining

Puffers are a must-have to battle icy winds and temperatures, but it’s no fun feeling like the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man. I like Uniqlo’s down selections, which are super light and slim-fitting. The vest fits smoothly under a coat so your core stays nice and toasty without the bulk.
High Performance Sportswear
For winter sports, I love this shirt by The North Face, made from a blend of Merino wool and high tech, quick-dry fabric that also helps regulate your body temperature. The tubing and panels give it a cool, sporty design, so you can keep warm and still look long and lean.
Of course, sometimes the best way to stay warm is to stay inside with a Hot Toddie close at hand. Happy winter, everyone!
