M2057 GANG: Avant Garde Fashion Inspired by Modern Architecture

Coinciding with Chicago's inaugural Architecture Biennial, Maria Pinto has designed a special, limited edition collection inspired by the work of architect Jeanne Gang, and photographed by Sandro Miller.

"M2057 GANG: Reveal, Architecture of the Body" plays with the relationship between garment and body form, and explores how women reveal and conceal their bodies.

More about M2057 Gang: Reveal, Architecture of the Body, by Maria Pinto

The M2057 GANG designs in turn cover and expose different structural points of the body and mimic musculature by creating negative-positive patterns. Bands of fabric and exposed seams slice out the body’s natural curves, giving the effect of masking and revealing simultaneously, and creating an architectural blueprint for the garment’s fit.

I was particularly inspired by Studio Gang’s aesthetic and philosophy of respecting an environment and the relationship a building has to its surroundings.

The skin and bones of garments and buildings drive my curiosity to search for new ways to interpret what we wear. Fashion and architecture inform each other—we even exchange vocabulary to describe our work: architectonic, constructed, folding, wrapping, draping. With the timeliness of the Architecture Biennial, I wanted to create a small collection that allowed me to explore the body in new ways, much like how Jeanne Gang explores environments for her work.
