Another edition of Maria Pinto’s Spotlight Series, In Her Own Words, is here. Each month, we feature the dynamic, stylish, and powerful women who inspire us daily.
This month’s Mother's Day spotlight features – Giselle Donado; Global Chief Counsel for Employment Law & Investigations focusing on risk management.

How has your experience of Mother’s Day changed over time—from before you were a mother to now?
Mother’s Day has evolved with each stage of life. When I was younger, it was about celebrating my mother and grandmother – two incredible women. Now that I am a mother, I celebrate with my husband and daughters. I also have an annual tradition with my girlfriends (aka my Board of Directors) where we go out for a fabulous dinner to celebrate ourselves on Mother’s Day weekend.
Can you share a Mother’s Day memory that has stayed with you?
When my older daughter was 6 years old she made a Mother’s Day card for me at school that asked her to include several words to describe me. The word that jumped out at me was “busy.” She also included a drawing of our family for me to take with me on business trips and taped it to the card. At the time I was a partner in private practice and traveling all the time. At that moment I decided it was time to leave private practice and find a job that would allow me to spend more time with my family. Three months later I began working in-house at a company. It was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. That moment changed my life. I’ve been able to spend so much more time with my family and friends and pursue personal interests.
What was your path to getting where you are today?
I always knew that I wanted to be a lawyer. My path to getting where I am today was paved by the love and support of others. My parents, who always supported me even when it took me far away from them. My mentors who taught me what good leadership looks like. My friends who have weathered the highs and lows of adulting, raising a family, and working in the legal profession with me. And, my husband, Joe, who has always encouraged me to pursue my passions, kept me sane, and is my partner in all things and best friend.
How do you create a work-life balance for yourself?
My mantra is work hard, play hard. I make a conscious effort to make time to spend with my family and friends, as well as carve out time for myself and create space for things other than work. I’ve been practicing yoga for the last 10 years and it has really helped me achieve balance in my life. I’m a yoga sculpt instructor at CorePower Yoga and teach twice a week at the Lakeview studio. It’s so different from my day job and allows me to disconnect and engage with a community of unique and amazing people. In the yoga studio, I’m not a mom, wife, or lawyer — I get to just be me. It always fills my cup.

What do you love and appreciate about being a woman?
I feel like being a woman is a superpower. There’s almost nothing that I think we can’t do. We are mothers, daughters, sisters, wives, friends, leaders, chefs, travel agents, party planners, problem solvers, tutors, chauffeurs, and boss ladies — to name just a few of the hats we wear. Women are master multi-taskers. We are compassionate and thoughtful, and female bonds are deep, fulfilling, and rewarding. I’m so thankful for all the amazing women in my life!
How would you describe your personal style?
Classic, feminine, with a touch of glam.
What is important to you when it comes to buying clothing?
I buy clothing that makes me feel confident. I love brands, like Maria Pinto, that make it easy to get dressed for any occasion and take the guesswork and frustration out of putting together a polished outfit.
How do you take care of yourself?
I believe that movement is medicine. I work out several times a week. No matter what is going on in my life, I always feel better after I work out. I love CorePower yoga, SoulCycle, and taking walks when I can’t make it to the studio. I treat myself to massages and acupuncture. I’ve learned to listen to what my body needs and to be unapologetic about taking time to take care of myself – to disconnect, recover, and recharge – so I can show up as my best self. I also get to sleep in thanks to my amazing husband, Joe.
What wisdom would you tell your younger self?
I would tell my younger self to enjoy every stage of life and not be in a rush to get to what’s next. Enjoy the present because it goes by fast. And, wear sunscreen!

Who are some of your style or fashion icons?
Olivia Pope in Scandal and Jessica Pearson in Suits. In real life, Victoria Beckham, Amal Clooney, Kate Middleton, and Jennifer Lopez.
If you could live anywhere (and money is no object), where would you choose?
I would love to live in London and Madrid – I feel at home in both cities.
What are you watching, reading, and/or listening to right now?
I just finished watching White Lotus (Max) and Younger (Netflix). I’m reading Red Rising. I’m always listening to Pitbull and Bad Bunny, and am currently loving new music from Lizzo and Lady Gaga.
Best piece of advice you've ever received?
When I was deciding where to go to law school I was debating between two schools and whether to go to one that was ranked higher. My father told me to go where I would be happier because my twenties were going to be some of the best years of my life. He was right. My father always reminds me that life is short and to prioritize happiness – choose life, the rest will fall into place.
What are some of your favorite features about the Maria Pinto collections?
My favorite feature of Maria’s clothes is that they always make you feel effortlessly elegant and chic. Her pieces are instantly recognizable — classic yet versatile, with color and personality. They mix and match so well across collections. I also love that Maria’s clothes are comfortable, machine washable, and travel friendly. Oh, and did I mention how many compliments you’ll get?!
