What industry do you work in and what is your role?
I am a partner at Morgan Lewis & Bockius LLP in Chicago, IL. I represent corporate clients in complex litigation matters, including employment discrimination lawsuits, whistleblower cases, matters arising under the Employee Retirement Income Security Act (ERISA), trade secret and noncompete matters, Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) cases, and Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) disputes in federal and state trial and appellate courts and before arbitrators and administrative review judges. I also advise on significant labor and employment matters and handle sensitive high-level executive matters and investigations.
What was your path to getting where you are today?
In high school, I was the Chief Justice of the Illinois Supreme Court in the YMCA Youth and Government Association’s annual conference in Springfield, IL. From a young age, I had a passion for the law and justice. During college, I wanted to study in Spain for a semester, and my mother said I could do so only on the condition that I took the law school entrance exam first. Both influences led to me law school and beyond that, a fulfilling career in law.
What are some challenges you've faced in your job or in your life, and how have you tackled them?
We all face challenges in our jobs and lives. What matters is how we learn and grow from them. Some of mine are unique to my era and profession, but are no less challenging than those newer workers are experiencing today. Being an attorney at a large law firm while managing motherhood was incredibly difficult. Looking back, I hardly know how I made it through those years, but am glad that I did—and that I have two wonderful children and a career for which I am grateful.
What are some challenges you're facing right now, and how have you tackled them?
My children are launched and I feel so incredibly fulfilled by work, so overall I feel very fortunate for where I am in life. The most difficult challenge I am facing right now involves caring for my parents who are in their 80s and facing health issues. They have moved in with me for the time being. Before becoming parents, we read so many books and do so much to educate ourselves about how to be the best parents we can be, yet there is not much out there that we can avail ourselves of in relation to taking care of our aging parents. I wish I had been better prepared for this journey, but have faith that I am right where I need to be right now.
What hobbies, organizations, or philanthropies are you involved in?
I serve on the Chicago Bar Association’s Judicial Evaluation Committee Board, the American Heart Association’s Counsel for a Cause Board, and am on a board for Brookfield Chicago Zoo Board. I also spend time volunteering in a number of pro bono matters including assisting organizations that help human trafficking and domestic violence victims. I currently also lead the women’s law group at my firm in Chicago.
How do you create a work-life balance for yourself?
I strongly believe in doing the things that bring you joy, whatever they may be. For me, running, volunteering in causes/organizations and spending time with family and friends have always been my three pillars of joy.

What do you love about being a woman? What is one of the biggest challenges? What brings you joy?
I love motherhood! Having unconditional love for my children has brought me the greatest joy in life.
How would you describe your personal style?
I enjoy dressing up in a simple and elegant manner, yet love loungewear!
How are you dressing for work right now?
I wear less suits, so I have to put more thought into what I wear. That gives me space to try newer trends.
How does your work style differ from your more casual or going-out style?
I tend to be a little more adventurous in my going-out style, but always enjoy comfort and quality.
Who are some of your style or fashion icons?
Sienna Miller, Amal Clooney
What are some of your favorite features of the Maria Pinto collection?

What are your favorite Maria Pinto pieces? Why?
I love her long pants! I wear them almost every week. I just bought a jacket that can double as a dress. The versatility (and washability!) are incomparable!
What are you watching, reading, and/or listening to right now?
Shamefully, too much Netflix. I recently read Justice Sotomayor’s My Beloved World. And am on at least my third round of Jane Austen. I am also a fan of Russian literature.
How do you take care of yourself?
Exercise is important to me. I run, bike, paddle board and do reformer pilates. Feeling healthy and strong is the self-care that I value most.
If you could live anywhere, where would you choose?
La Jolla, CA. The ocean and cliff views are unsurpassable. I love hiking, running and enjoy the outdoors year-round, and the produce and fish are incredibly fresh. And my son lives nearby.
Best gift you've ever received?
My children.
Best piece of advice you've ever received? What wisdom would you tell your younger self?
Manifest what you want to have happen. Give yourself grace.
