What was your path to getting where you are today?

After law school I spent a few years at a consulting firm. During that time, I made it my mission to meet as many people as possible both in the legal and operational side of the business and in the larger Washington DC community. Over the 24 years that I’ve been practicing at law firms some of those connections have grown into long-lasting friendships and become my professional and personal support system.

How do you create a work-life balance for yourself?

I may not be the best person to comment on work-life balance, but I try to create space for life outside of work, time with my family and friends and an opportunity to “pour into myself” which is a metaphor for practicing self-care and prioritizing my well-being. While I’m not perfect I try to exercise three times a week and have recently started lifting heavy weights, which is a new phase of my exercise evolution. I do not strictly divide my time between work and the rest of my life, thus it is not uncommon for me to work over the weekend or during family vacations, but I balance my time so that both my clients/colleagues feel taken care of, as well as my family and friends.

What do you love and appreciate about being a woman?

I find joy in spending time with the people I love including my family and friends. A number of my family members have passed away, so I try to cherish the time that I have with those that are still with us. I’m always up for spending time with the people I love, whether that is over a meal, a walk, or a quick visit.

How would you describe your personal style?

My personal style is classic and professional, with a bit of an edge.

How are you dressing right now?

I try to dress with an unexpected twist, this could mean a printed t-shirt under a suit jacket or fun incorporating fun prints in dresses and suits. I now feel less of a need to conform to the somewhat boring, but very professional legal uniform, which is typically a black or navy skirt suit. I now have brighter colors and prints in my work wardrobe.

What wisdom would you tell your younger self?

I would tell my younger self “do not fear failure”. I believe that what holds us back is often the fear that we will fail and the embarrassment that goes along with that failure. Failure is actually necessary for growth and I would tell my younger self to try all the things and not to fear failure.

What are you watching, reading, and/or listening to right now?

I am reading The Let Them Theory by Mel Robbins

How do you take care of yourself?

I aim for seven hours of sleep a night.

If you could live anywhere (and money is no object), where would you choose?

I cannot pick one location!

Best gift you ever received?

My sons (who are almost young men, ages 19 and 16) are the best gift I received.

What are some of your favorite features of the Maria Pinto collection?

My favorite features of the Maria Pinto collection are the fantastic prints, the unique cuts that flatter a woman’s shape and the durability of the garments. I frequently travel for work and the fabric of the suits are simply magical. Somehow all folds and clothing wrinkles come out when hung up so I often reach for my Maria Pinto items when I’m packing for a trip.

What are your favorite Maria Pinto pieces? Why?

I have so many favorite items, but I really like the Natasha 2 pant because it seems to be flattering on all body types. In addition, I really like the prints that are professional, but also provide a bit of design flair to my wardrobe.
